Over 200 media practitioners and democracy activists gathered at Leboh Pasar, here to protest against the suspension of The Edge Weekly and The Edge Financial Daily owned by The Edge Media Group.

The group urged to government to respect the freedom of press and information.

“This is not only about The Edge,” said senior journalist R. Nadeswaran.

They had earlier gathered in front of Central Market at 11am before heading to Leboh Pasar.

Several political leaders such as Saifuddin Abdullah, Gobind Singh Deo, Liew Chin Tong, Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, Tony Pua, Dyana Sofya and activists – Maria Chin and Ambiga Sreenevasan also joined the rally.

They also called for restrictions on the Sarawak Report website to be withdrawn.

The group also expressed their concern and protested against the government's proposal to regulate Internet news portals through the amendment of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

“We demand the government not to intimidate the media practitioners,” said activist Fathi Aris Omar.

The rally was jointly organised by FCC, Geramm, Centre for Independant Journalism (CIJ) and Reporters sans Frontiers KL.
