Local authority including enforcement officers could be in cahoots with the human trafficking syndicate and the mass graves found near the Malaysia-Thailand border.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government is now working closely with the Forestry Department at the borders in investigating the matter.

He said based on investigation, the mass graves have links to Thailand and Bangladesh and also involved locals.

He said the suspects have been detained for investigations but said that he could not reveal further.

Ahmad Zahid also did not rule out the possibility that the suspected officers could have been in cahoots with the traffickers by allowing the trafficked victims to cross the borders or were involved in the operation to bury them.

“We are not denying that but investigation is on-going,” he said.

On Sunday, Ahmad Zahid confirmed the discovery of mass graves near 17 tents believed to have been used to accommodate refugees in Padang Besar.

He said the General Operations Force (GOF) and the VAT 69 Commando unit had found 14 large tents and three other smaller tents located on the Malaysia-Thailand border.

Thailand police in early May had found secret human-trafficking camps on their side of the border and dozens of shallow graves.

Thailand launched a crackdown on human-smuggling following the discovery of its mass graves.
