An outing for a group of 10 youths turned into a tragedy when one of them drowned in Sungai Chiling, Hulu Selangor, during a picnic there today.

Muhamad Azimzulhilmi Mohd Bakri, 22, from Shah Alam, Selangor, was fishing at the riverbank when he slipped and fell into the three-metre deep river, Selangor Fire and Rescue assistant director (operations) Mohd Sani Harul said.

He said the victim could not swim and his friends were not able to help as the spot where Muhamad Azimzulhilmi fell was too deep.

Mohd Sani said a team of six firefighters and an engine from the Kuala Kubu Baru Fire and Rescue station rushed to the scene after being informed of the incident.

"The victim's body was found at 3.50pm and then sent to the Kuala Kubu Baru Hospital for post-mortem," he added.
