Malaysia expects to receive a report today on the investigation into a claim that wreckage of a plane that could be the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 had been found on an island in the southern Philippines, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

He had said that the Philippine authorities were conducting an inspection at the location where the wreckage was claimed to have been seen.

Khalid did not say when exactly today the report would be received from the Philippine authorities.

On Saturday, a man named Jamil Omar lodged a report at the Sandakan police station in Sabah claiming that his aunt had spotted the wreckage of a plane in the jungle of Sugbay Island in the Philippines in early September.

In his report, Jamil had claimed that his aunt found many human skeletons in the wreckage as well as a Malaysian flag measuring 178cm by 89cm.

Flight MH370 dropped off radar on March 8 as it flew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 227 passengers and 12 crew on board.

The Boeing 777 aircraft has yet to be found, even after an exhaustive search in the southern Indian Ocean where it is believed to have gone down after veering off course.
