Malaysia does not impose a flat rate for its highway tolls as some countries practised, according to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar.

"Malaysia's approach is to impose a low rate in the initial stage and then allow the concessionaires to increase it every three or five years," he told reporters when asked to comment on the recent increase in toll rates here.

He said the hikes depended on construction costs, expenditure and the concessionaires' debt repayment.

Twelve highways in Klang Valley are involved in the toll hike of between 10 sen and RM6, effective Oct 15.

Abdul Wahid earlier joined more than 4,000 participants in the Statsrun 2015 organised by the statistics department, Prime Minister's Department at Dataran Putrajaya here today, in conjunction with World Statistics Day on Oct 20.
