A man who was found dead in a river bank at the site of a day market in Kampung Golok Puting, Ayer Hitam yesterday evening was a Myanmar national and holder of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card.

He was identified as Md Mamad Md Eliyas, 32, a labourer.

Kubang Pasu police chief Supt Mohd Ismail Ibrahim said there were animal bite marks on the victim's ears, neck and left hand.

In a statement here today, he said the police were waiting for the post-mortem report to determine the cause of death.

About 3.40pm yesterday, Md Mamad's maggot-infested remains were found by passers-by before the police were alerted.

Mohd Ismail said the victim had a previous criminal record but declined to elaborate.
