The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is expected to open an investigation paper (IP) on Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng over his alleged purchase of a bungalow at an undervalued price.

As reported by Bernama, a reliable source said the IP would be opened under the MACC Act 2009, "for allegedly receiving a bribe from a party with interest".

"We received a number of reports on the issue today and we are waiting to see whether there are more to come.

"We would normally open an IP as soon as possible in cases like this and we will investigate regardless of who the individual is," he told Bernama.

The source also said the MACC would call Guan Eng to give his statement, after obtaining the complainants and witnesses' statements.

Earlier, the commission in a statement said that this is a “new revelation”.

“MACC’s previous investigation was on the tenancy of the house, and not the purchase of it,” it said.

The commission also said it will investigate all complaints and information received without bias.

Meanwhile, Guan Eng in a press conference today claimed that he had bought his bungalow in Jalan Pinhorn here for RM2.8 million on a willing buyer-willing seller basis.

The 30-year-old double-storey bungalow was bought from a private owner, he said.

"I took a bank loan of RM2.1 million and paid the remaining RM700,000 in cash based on my income as the chief minister and an elected representative," he told a news conference at Komplek Tun Abdul Razak (Komtar) here.

Lim had read out a statement at the press conference and declined to take questions.
