The law on "khalwat" (close proximity) in Selangor is aimed at preventing illicit sex and investigation on this is made based on complaints from the public.

Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) chairman Datuk Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa and Selangor Mufti Datuk Mohd Tamyes Abdul Wahid, in a joint statement today, investigation was also conducted according to procedures as provided in the Syariah Criminal Procedure (State of Selangor) Enactment.

"So, it is wrong to accuse religious enforcement officers of spying and invading into a person's privacy when the action is in line with the process provided in the law," it said.

The statement was issued in response to a call by a group of retired civil servants, G25, for punishment against khalwat to be abolished if it is committed in a private dwelling.
