KUALA LUMPUR: “He gave his honours to the world again, His blessed part to heaven, and…henceforth, will now sleep in peace".

Those were the words written by fellow politician friend, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim dedicated to the late DAP national chairman, Karpal Singh.

PKR de-facto leader Anwar in his official press statement on Thursday said that he heard the news at about 3am and was totally devastated as he had a long conversation with the Karpal who was also the Bukit Gelugor MP just the day before the accident.

“After getting hold of myself, I then tweeted a short condolence expressing deep sorrow and devastation over the loss of our indefatigable fighter for justice,” Anwar stated.

Anwar's wife, Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and his family also offered their deepest condolence to Karpal's wife Gurmit Kaur and their five children.

Anwar indicated the nation has lost one of its most dedicated 'servants'.

“The people have lost a selfless, courageous and noble defender of their fundamental liberties. The legal fraternity has lost one of its sharpest minds and I have lost a true friend, kind in words, noble in deed,” added Anwar.

Anwar ended his statement with a short poem; “Cowards die many times before their deaths. The valiant never taste of death but once.”



Meanwhile, PAS leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat also conveyed his condolences at the passing of the ‘Tiger of Jelutong'.

Nik Aziz on his Facebook page, described Karpal's departure as a great loss to the political scene as he was known for his principles and unshakable stands.

According to Nik Aziz, Karpal was a strong supporter of the Malaysian Constitution and had a firm stand that Malaysia is a secular country.

“I remember when I visited him at his home early last year; I was given a very warm welcome. He even sent me to the door of my vehicle despite his condition to be wheelchair bound,” Nik Aziz recalled.

Both the PKR and PAS leaders extended their condolence via social media.

Karpal, 74, a respected lawyer died in an accident along the North-South Highway near Gua Tempurung, Tapah, early this morning.

He died on the spot in the accident which occured at about 1am. The accident also took the life of his long-time personal assistant, Michael Cornelius, 39.

His eldest son, Gobind Singh Deo confirmed the passing of his father through a statement on Twitter at 3.40am.

Karpal was reportedly on his way from Kuala Lumpur to Penang with his son, Ramkarpal Singh, also a lawyer, for a court case later this morning. Ramkarpal and the driver of the car are both seriously injured.
