Malaysians have been urged to not engage in activities that could damage the harmony enjoyed in the country such as participating in public rallies.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said this was because several activities organised by certain parties were solely intended to damage the country's image on the international stage.

"Any gathering, particularly based on race, is not conducive to national unity.

"I'm not saying these people don't have the right to do so. They can assemble peacefully but in my opinion, this is not the way to solve problems.

"I feel that the best way to solve problems is to sit down together and discuss about them," Joseph said after the launch of the Malaysia Day celebration organised by the Malaysia Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry here today.

Apart from that, he said, the people should strengthen their patriotic spirit and love for the country especially at a time when Malaysia is faced with numerous threats to national security and sovereignty.

"Malaysia is currently faced with huge challenges from the Daish terror group and we want the people, especially the youth, to cultivate the spirit of patriotism so they won't be easily swayed with propaganda through social media," Joseph said.

Speaking on the possibility of a terror threat aimed at disrupting Malaysia Day celebrations on Sept 16, Joseph said he is confident the situation will be under control under the watchful eyes of the police and Home Ministry.
