The Islamic Development Department Malaysia (Jakim) wants more industry players in Malaysia to comply with the Malaysian halal certification standards and requirements of the Halal Assurance System (SJH).

Jakim Director-General Datuk Othman Mustapha said initially the new system will be implemented for multinational companies.

"Small and medium enterprises will be briefed and guided from time to time until they are ready to implement the system," he told Bernama.

The system constantly monitors and helps confirm the halal status of raw materials, processes and products that have obtained halal certification, he said.

Since 2007, Jakim has issued 12,727 halal certificates including 10,857 for products, 1,746 for food premises and 184 for abbatoirs.

Othman said this year Jakim targets more applications for its two new halal certification schemes -- the halal pharmaceutical scheme to be launched on Oct 4, and the recently launched halal logistics scheme.

"Jakim really hopes industry players are ready and heed our call to provide halal pharmaceutical services and products as well as halal logistics services for consumers in Malaysia," he said.

He said Jakim is actively involved in promoting Malaysia's halal certification and logo by sharing its experiences with other countries.

Besides Jakim, other agencies also promote Malaysia's halal logo internationally, including the Food, Biotech and Halal, Trade and Services Promotion Division of the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade), as well as the Halal Industry Development Corporation, he said.

Jakim currently recognises a total of 73 foreign halal certification bodies, he added.
