The High Court here today allowed an application to postpone the six-month jail sentence on a mother who was found guilty of slapping the face of a female teacher two years ago.

The housewife, Tan Seow Yen, 36, was also imposed a RM2,000-fine for the offence, which she paid for.

Judicial Commissioner Datuk Azmi Ariffin allowed the postponement of the implementation of the jail sentence while awaiting the outcome of the appeal for the case in the Appeals Court.

On March 8, counsel Mohd Ismail Mohamed who represented the accused filed the appeal to reduce the sentence at the High Court.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Azrul Abdul Rahman offered a bail of RM5,000 with one surety and asked that Tan's passport be surrendered to the court and she report to the nearest police station every month.

Azmi then allowed the accused bail of RM5,000 with one surety, and rejected the prosecution's other application as the bail was sufficient to ensure the accused's presence at the court hearing.

Tan had started serving the six-month jail sentence on March 8 after the Jawi Sessions Court found her guilty for injuring a female teacher by slapping her at a school in Sungai Bakap, near here at 5.15pm on Feb 2, 2015.

The mother of three children aged between eight and 14 years was accused of slapping the teacher who had allegedly pinched her nine-year-old son.

The case was investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code which carries a prison sentence of one year or RM2,000 fine, or both. -- Bernama
