The Indonesian government on Tuesday apologised for the haze currently affecting the nearby region.

The apology was delivered by one of its member of Parliament, Hamdhani Mukhdar Said on behalf of the Indonesian government on the difficulties that plagued neighbouring countries, including Malaysia and Singapore.

Hamdhani who is responsible for environment and international relations, said the fires, which occurred mainly in Sumatra and Kalimantan were due to the drought.

"The fires that caused the haze were not started intentionally but were due to the drought in Kalimantan and other parts of Indonesia.

"But these things happen in our country, where forest fires occur every summer. So we apologise to the government of Malaysia and Singapore for causing the haze," he told reporters at the 36th General Assembly of the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) today.

He added that the Indonesian Central Government is taking all necessary measures to control and prevent forest fires in the country.

On Sunday, Indonesian President Joko Widodo visited South Sumatra province to get a closer look at forest fires that have been causing terrible haze and affecting neighbouring countries such as Malaysia and Singapore recently.

Local media reported that he was accompanied by the police chief, military chief, head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and a senior official from Environment and Forestry Ministry.
