National Heart Institute (IJN) recorded a success rate of 95 to 97 percent in heart patient treatment last year.

Its chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Azhari Yakub said the percentage involved treatment of more than 9,000 patients with different types of heart disease, and those referred to IJN.

He said the success also encompassed about 4,000 patients who underwent surgery and 5,000 cardiolody treatment (non surgery) cases.

"The various modern technology owned by IJN, supported by a strong medical specialist team help us to make sure that every surgery or treatment is a success.

"To ensure that IJN can maintain its record of excellence, we will apply the use of various new technologies this year and simultaneously help to reduce surgeries particularly involving valve replacement," he said.

Mohd Azhari said this when met by reporters after attending IJN's corporate social initiative 'My Heart My Life 2017', at Kampung Naran, Batu Maung here Wednesday.

At the event, Yayasan IJN, a non-profit organisation received a RM10,000 contribution from the Penang State Government and RM50,000 from Federal Oat Mills Sdn Bhd.

Mohd Azhari said IJN would continue with the initiative to get close to the community particularly those in the rural community to create greater awareness among them on the importance of practising an active and healthy lifestyle. -- Bernama
