A total of 259 schools in Perlis, Jerantut and Temerloh in Pahang would be closed tomorrow due to extreme hot weather, said Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid today.

Mahdzir in a statement today said there is a need for the school closures due to rising heat exceeding 37 Celcius daily and for the next 72 hours.

The closures would affect 97,533 students from 68 secondary schools,191 primary schools and preschool.

Mahdzir said that teachers and schools administration employees are required to report for duties, adding that no replacement of school days were required.

The Education Departments in these respective states were also ordered to monitor the weather regularly before deciding on the need to close schools.

The Ministry has also advised teachers, parents and guardians to keep close supervision of the students.
