Haze: Netizens from four countries share their gripe

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei are among the countries in the region affected by the haze due to forest fires raging in neighboring Indonesia. 

Netizens took to social media to share their experiences and photos in their respective areas.

In Malaysia and Singapore, keywords such as ‘jerebu’ or ‘haze’ were trending.

In Indonesia meanwhile, netizens typed in #MelawanAsap, #PrayForRiau and #PrayForKalimantan.



MALAYSIA

The air quality in Malaysia has worsened, particularly in some areas in Sarawak and Johor.
With the deteriorating air quality nationwide, many shared their experiences with photos in their respective areas and some health tips.

The public have been advised to minimise outdoor activities as many had fallen sick due to the haze.

Among the problems faced were shortness of breath, coughing, and irritation to the eyes or skin.











SINGAPORE

Visible smog was seen in the air across the city-state this week, with the three-hour Pollutants Standard Index (PSI) hitting over 200 on Thursday night, the highest so far this year.

On Friday, air quality continued to stay in the unhealthy range, with the 24-hour PSI ranged from 140-160, according to the National Environment Agency.

The government has also said it will assist Indonesia to combat the problem.









INDONESIA

On Tuesday, the Indonesian government apologised for the haze currently affecting the nearby region.

The apology was delivered by one of its member of Parliament, Hamdhani Mukhdar Said on behalf of the Indonesian government on the difficulties that plagued neighbouring countries, including Malaysia and Singapore.

Hamdhani who is responsible for environment and international relations, said the fires, which occurred mainly in Sumatra and Kalimantan were due to the drought.

The trending hastags in Indonesia are #PrayForRiau and #PrayForKalimantan, in which both Riau (Sumatra) and Kalimantan area greatly affected by the haze.

BRUNEI

Brunei recorded a ‘Good’ PSI reading today, even though it was also affected by the haze these past few days.

As at 4pm today, Brunei-Muara recorded a PSI reading of 46, Belait (45), Temburong (35) and Tutong (40).
