A woman and her two young granddaughters were killed in an accident involving a motorcycle and a car at Km 112 of the East-West Expressway near Kampung Batu Melintang Luar here Sunday.

Jeli District Police Headquarters management division chief ASP Ahmad Haizan Abdullah said Wan Zubaidah Md Zain, 53, and two-year-old Putri Nur Sofea Mohamad Asriellazuan died on the spot in the mishap which occurred at 4.40 pm, while four-year-old Putri Nur Syufina Arora Mohamad Asriellazuan succumbed to her injuries at the Jeli Hospital an hour later.

"The accident occurred when the motorcycle they were riding was making a right turn but was hit by the car from the opposite direction," he told Bernama when contacted here Monday.

The bodies were buried in a mass grave at the Pasir Dusun Muslim cemetery at 11am Monday.

The incident also captured the attention of International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed who also expressed his condolence to the victims' family through his Facebook page late Sunday.

It is learnt that Mustapa, who is Jeli Member of Parliament, was in the area for a one-day visit. - Bernama
