Former Museums Department director-general Datuk Shahrum Yub died at his home in Bukit Bandaraya here today, due to old age.

He was 82.

The Department of Museums Malaysia in a statement said Shahrum, who held the Museums director-general post for 23 years, beginning 1968, died at 1.30pm.

Funeral prayers were performed at Masjid Abu Bakar As Siddiq, Bangsar before his remains were buried at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery after Asar prayers.

Museums Department deputy director-general (museology) Mohd Azmi Mohd Yusoff when contacted, described Shahrum's death as a great loss to the nation.

"He was very dedicated to the job, as well as warm and friendly towards his employees.

"We regard him as an icon who orchestrated several major exhibitions," he said.

Shahrum is survived by widow, Datin Maureen Shakeby, three children and five grandchildren. - BERNAMA
