Several areas in the Kulai district were inundated with up to one metre-high floodwaters following the burst of a retention pond yesterday.

The affected areas were Taman Wedo, Taman Sawit Ria, Taman Palma and Rumah Murah Kelapa Sawit.

Johor Health, Environment, Education and Information Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said the incident occurred between 6pm and 8pm but no resident was relocated.

"The floods came about after a retention pond built by a developer burst, causing its water to flow into houses in Taman Wedo.

"In addition, another nearby retention pond could not cope with the water and subsequently, overflowed into the main road and Rumah Murah Kelapa Sawit areas," he said in a statement here today.

On the other hand, the flash floods in Taman Sawit Ria and Taman Palma were caused by heavy rain and overflowed water from Taman Wedo and Rumah Murah Kelapa Sawit into Sungai Pontian.

Ayub said as a short-term solution, enforcement was needed to ensure that the developer would adhere to the erosion and sediment control plan, as well as the impelementation of excavation works on Sungai Pontian streams. - BERNAMA
