Shabery refutes allegation social networking sites will be blocked

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek today refuted the allegation that the government will block some social networking sites in the country.

In fact, he also described those making and spreading the allegation as irresponsible people who are out to create trouble in the country.

"It is not true at all. I believe certain quarters are trying to make profit by disseminating sensational news like this, that the government is going to block social networking sites in the country.

"We have studied this proposal before and I have said it is not appropriate because Malaysia is a democratic country and the people are free to express their views. At the same time, it should not be abused to the extent of creating chaos, raising concerns and public anxiety.

"Don't worry. Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites will not be blocked," he told reporters after distributing 2,000 packs of 'bubur lambuk' in conjunction with the 'Explorasi Sehati Sejiwa 2015' programme at Centrepoint Supermarket in Kemaman here today.

The allegation that the government had decided to block all social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Instagram from Aug 1 went viral over the social media earlier.
