Do not ask for foreign government’s intervention which may violate the country's dignity, freedom and sovereignty.

This was said by UMNO youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin in a statement when referring to a petition set up on the White House website urging the Obama administration to make the release of Opposition leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim a top priority in the United State’s foreign policy with Malaysia.

“Any attempt for the Anwar Ibrahim case to be made into a ' bilateral issue' by the US government will be regarded as an attempt to interfere in our internal issues and violate the sovereignty of Malaysia.

“We also hope that no Malaysians would urge any foreign government to put pressure on the government in this case.

“Anwar Ibrahim’s supporters are not restricted from supporting him in court and in front of the Sungai Buloh prison. The political parties supporting Anwar Ibrahim are free to contest in the next election,” he said.

The petition was started by John Mallot, a former US ambassador to Malaysia and can only be signed by Americans.

Khairy said even though the petition could not be prevented because it is a practice of democracy in America, UMNO Youth rejects any foreign intervention into the country’s internal affairs.
