MCA President Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai slammed several quarters who related the Bersih 4 rally as a racial gathering.

He also said that there was no reason to label the Chinese community as the participants who dominated the 34 hour rally held on Saturday and Sunday.

“I would like to state here, there is no connection to race.

“I do not want people to label it as a racial gathering. This is not good for the country,” said Liow after the launch of Kembara Kasih Merdeka 2015 in Putrajaya today.

He stressed that such thinking is immature for the current time where Malaysia is seen as a multiracial country.

Liow added that each opinion given should be within the scope of the law.

“We are people of different races, anyone has the rights to voice their opinion and action but it should be based on the laws of a democratic constitutional state,” he added.

The Bersih 4 rally which lasted for 34 hours ended at midnight last night although it had initially garnered various obstacles from local authorities and police who characterized the rally as illegal.

Meanwhile, Liow had also declined to comment further on the statement given by an MCA senator, Deputy Education Minister Chong Sin Woon on August 28, who allowed university students to join the Bersih 4 rally .

According to him, the matter would first be probed at the party level.
