The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has rejected BERSIH’s application to use Dataran Merdeka and Padang Merbuk for its rally on August 29 and 30.

DBKL has instead suggested that BERSIH holds its rally a week after Merdeka, August 31.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Amin Nordin said this is because both the venues have been booked earlier for other events.

“Dataran Merdeka and the area surrounding it will be used preparations for the Merdeka parade while Padang Merbuk will be used by the Armed Forces for the Merdeka preparations,” he said at a press conference after a meeting with BERSIH 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah.

The mayor said since Maria was adamant on holding the rally on that particular date and venue, DBKL has no choice but to treat the rally goers as the usual crowd.

“This does not mean we are allowing the rally. But we will tolerate them as the usual crowd as long as they don’t destroy government properties and control themselves,” he said.

“But, if they want to set up tents, then they need permission,” he added.

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar called on BERSIH organisers to hold the rally at the National Stadium.

Khalid said, the stadium in Bukit Jalil was more suitable for the gathering which is expected to see an attendance of some 100,000 people.

He said Dataran Merdeka and Padang Merbok were not suitable locations as the venues were being prepared for the Merdeka Day celebrations.
