The intention of the Bersih 4.0 peaceful assembly is not to topple the government but it acts as a call at the national level for reform, said Electoral Reform coalition Bersih 2.0 president Maria Chin.

"We do not want to topple the government, definitely not, in fact we want to strengthen the present government through institutional reform.

"We are not about violence, this is a peaceful assembly, not to topple the government, we are here to actually have a national call for reform," she said in an exclusive interview with Astro AWANI.

She said the institutional reform can restore the confidence in economy and political system among investors and people.

She also said allegations that Bersih rallies instigate violence are not true.

“The peaceful gathering and marching is for a better nation. Having people marching with us is part and parcel of our aspirations for a better country. Therefore, why would we create violence.

“We want the government to take heed that they should not use this Bersih 4.0 rally as an excuse to call for an emergency,” she reiterated.

She said if the government is genuinely committed in building a better nation, it should bring in the institutional reforms.

“Do not turn this whole rally into a racial issue or a violent event just because you want to stay in power. This is only about the people wanting a reform for our country,” she said.

Bersih will be holding a rally on August 29 and 30 although the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had rejected the movement's application to use Dataran Merdeka and Padang Merbuk for the rally.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Amin Nordin said this is because both the venues have been booked earlier for other events.
