Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed that two of the Bangladeshi nationals who died in the attack in Dhaka, Bangladesh were ex-students of Monash University in Malaysia.

However, he said, police had not identified whether they were victims or members of the armed group that carried out the attack.

"Police will contact the Bangladesh authorities to obtain confirmation," he said.

On July 1, a group of armed men attacked the cafe at Holey Artisan Bakery and held several individuals hostage.

When negotiations failed, Bangladesh security forces stormed the premises and managed to rescue at least 13 of the hostages and shot dead six men who had attacked the cafe which is popular with foreigners.
