Malaysia was greatly honoured with the election of Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) Director-General Datuk Seri Azharuddin Abdul Rahman as President of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) 39th General Assembly, early this week.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said this was a significant testament to the strength of Malaysia's ties with its fellow civil aviation nations and colleagues around the globe.

"Indeed, we are greatly heartened that our active support and participation within ICAO has received such recognition. In addition, I had the privilege of addressing the esteemed Assembly regarding the future of global civil aviation," he said in a statement.

Liow also emphasised the importance ICAO plays in ensuring safety, efficiency and sustainability within the sector, while reiterating Malaysia’s commitment to supporting ICAO’s various initiatives towards this goal, he said in a statement here, today.

He said Malaysia had submitted the candidacy for re-election to the Council of ICAO, and hoped would be able to continue playing a strong and active part in this important international organisation. - Bernama
