A total of 7,258 road users have been slapped with demerit points, while 142,135 summonses were issued for road offences recorded under the Automated Awareness Security System (Awas), since it came into effect on April 15.

From the total, exceeding the speed limit recorded the highest number of offences with 129,781 cases, while 12,354 for failure to comply with traffic lights signals, the Transport Ministry said in a written reply to Datuk Mahfuz Omar (PAS-Pokok Sena) in the Dewan Rakyat.

According to the ministry, currently, 21 Awas cameras had begun operations at eight locations in Perak, Kuala Lumpur (three), Putrajaya (two), Johor (two), Perak (two), Selangor (two), Terengganu (two), Kelantan and Kedah (one each).

The ministry said this in reply to Mahfuz's question on the statistics of summonses issued and demerit points incurred since the enforcement of Awas as well as the number of Awas cameras installed.
