The Kelantan Legislative Assembly today approved a motion congratulating the Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V, on his election as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong effective Dec 13 this year.

The motion, which was approved unanimously, was proposed by Azami Md Nor (PAS-Kadok) at the assembly session at the Kota Darul Naim Complex here.

Several assemblymen, among them Datuk Hassan Mohamood (PAS-Tawang), Datuk Md Alwi Che Ahmad (BN-Kok Lanas) and Datuk Husam Musa (Amanah-Salor), spoke in support of the motion during the debate.

The Conference of Rulers, at its 243rd (special) meeting at the Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 14, elected Sultan Muhammad V as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong effective Dec 13 to succeed the current Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, who is the Sultan of Kedah.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong is elected from among nine Malay Rulers to reign for a period of five years.

Md Alwi, speaking during the debate, said the people of Kelantan were grateful and proud over the election of Sultan Muhammad V as the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Husam said the election of the sultan would bring greater development to Kelantan, including expansion of the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Pengkalan Chepa here and the Tok Bali Port in Pasir Puteh as well as flood mitigation projects.

When winding up the debate, Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said all the people of Kelantan extended their congratulations to the sultan on his election as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. -- Bernama
