The petition by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s family to seek royal pardon for the Opposition Leader who is serving his five-year sentence for sodomy has been “disposed” on March 16 by the Pardons Board.

Senior federal counsel Amarjeet Singh who presented an affidavit to the court this morning informed that the board had disposed the petition.

With the disposal of the petition, the Constitution seemed to be clear of its stance over the issue.

The affidavit avowed by the director-general of the legal division of the Prime Minister’s Department has been submitted to the applicants.

The affidavit states that Anwar should remain in custody.

In response to what had transpired, Nurul Izzah told Astro AWANI that they are waiting for an official confirmation on the status of the petition in the upcoming Wednesday.

Also when asked, she said, any course of action would follow from Wednesday’s official confirmation.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s family sought a royal pardon for his sodomy conviction on February 24 .

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said Anwar’s wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail and his daughter Nurul Nuha went to the Istana Negara to submit the application, while Nurul Izzah has submitted an official letter to the Parliament to inform of the matter.

Anwar's second daughter, Nurul Nuha, 31, said in a statement that the petition was made 'based on Article 42 of the Federal Constitution'.

"We have confidence in the process of the constitution and believe that the principle of justice will prevail when all the facts are studied comprehensively without political intervention or that from any branch of the government in line with the separation of power through the institution of Constitutional Monarchy," she said.
