Activist Hishamuddin Rais has been arrested by the police at 2.30pm at his residence in Taman Seputeh here, today.

According to his counsel Sivamalar Genapathy, Hishamuddin was arrested under Section 143 Penal Code in connection with organising an illegal rally. At Press time, Hishamuddin has been brought to the Dang Wangi police headquarters.

“At the moment, investigating officers have not recorded his statement. I ‘m unsure if Hishamuddin will be detained overnight for his hearing remand tomorrow or will be released today after his statement has been recorded,” said Genapathy to Astro AWANI.

Sivamalar also said that PKR vice president Rafizi Ramli was arrested along with Hishamuddin at the Dang Wangi police headquarters.

“Rafizi is at the Kuala Lumpur Police headquarters before he was brought to Dang Wangi police headquarters for his statement to be recorded,” he said, adding that Hishamuddin was arrested under Section 141 and 143 of the Penal Code and Section 4 of the Sedition Act.

The May 1 Goods and Services Tax rally saw a staggering 10,000 protesters taking part to voice their grouses against the government’s move in introducing the new tax system on April 1.

May 1 anti-GST rally protesters arrested

The anti-GST demonstration was organised by the non-governmental organisation from May 1 Secretariat at various venues around Kuala Lumpur including Central Market, Masjid Jamek, Dataran Merdeka and the National Mosque at around 2.30pm.

The 10,000-odd protesters then proceeded to Kuala Lumpur City Centre before the crowd dispersed around 5.30pm.
