Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has called for amendments to be made to the National Drug Policy, to include small-scale drug dealers in the Act.

He said, the proposal has already been submitted to the Home Ministry and the matter is currently under review.

"It would likely be costly and involve infrastructures, because if we are given the responsibility to monitor drug dealers, we may need to build more detention centres," he said at a press conference, Wednesday.

Khalid said cases involving small-scale drug dealers were usually left unpunished under the Special Preventive Measures Act.

"They roam freely and if they're punished, the punishment is too light and they are free to go back to their activities.

“I think they should be kept in prison for a longer period to prevent the spread of drug-trafficking,” he said.
