The road closed for the upgrading project on Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu was reopened at 4am this morning after Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng issued a stop work order on the project.

The closure caused a massive traffic jam on the island yesterday.

In a series of tweets, Lim said he had ordered the Public Works Department (PWD) to stop work and reopen the road to motorists.

Upset with the issue, Lim said he is also awaiting for a better traffic diversion plan from the PWD.

Lim described yesterday's traffic jam as the Penang's worst congestion crisis.

He also said the road upgrading plan is a Federal government project and the state government had to adhere to PWD's advice on road closure due to public safety.

Lim also took a swipe at the PWD and UEM, the company involved in the project, saying they did not employ qualified people to implement the traffic diversion.

Meanwhile, Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin Road said the road closure is only during night.

"After getting 100+ angry phone calls & 200 sms, I can finally sigh a relief. Haha...," he wrote on his Facebook page.
