The implementation of the Automatic Enforcement System (AES) has reduced accident fatalities and raised the rate of road compliance regulations, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said based on Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) analysis on road accident statistics in 14 locations that installed AES cameras, it was revealed that accident fatalities had reduced to 12 cases during the eight-month period after the system was implemented from 19 cases during the same period before implementation.

"This means that AES managed to reduce seven accident fatalities or 36.84 per cent for only eight months," he said in a written reply to Dr Azman Ismail (PKR-Kuala Kedah) at the Dewan Rakyat sitting here Thursday.

Azman had asked the ministry to state the total fines collected through the AES system up to date and effectiveness in reducing road accidents.

Liow also said a study conducted by Miros showed that prior to AES implementation, the average compliance rate of speed limits on working days at six locations with AES fixed cameras was about 63 per cent compared to 91 per cent after implementation.

"For four AES fixed cameras in traffic light junctions, the rate of non compliance before AES implementation was 4.3 per cent, which was reduced to 2.2 per cent after implementation," he said.

As such he said the government was confident if the AES was implemented nationwide, the compliance rate for traffic regulations would increase, enabling the drastic drop in the number of accident fatalities.

Up to April this year, Liow said 264,750 AES summonses were paid, amounting to RM76,647,750,00.
