A newborn baby boy was found near Blok 98 of Pangsapuri Taman Pelangi Indah, Jalan Perak here today.

The baby weighing 2.4 kilograms was found by a woman on the edge of the stairs of the apartment at about 7.58am, wrapped in a towel.

Timur Laut District police chief Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said a team member from the Jelutong police station rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call from the public about the discovery.

Following an inspection, Mior said that the baby is healthy and unharmed.

"Further investigation will be carried out under Section 318 of the Penal Code for abandonment of a child under 12 years of age by a parent.

"We will also conduct an investigation to track down the mother and also conduct an investigation from several aspects such as the blood stains found on the scene," he said.

Mior said further investigations are underway, including information from local residents as well as closed-circuit television (CCTV) in the area to identify the person responsible.

The baby was taken to the Penang Hospital (HPP) for observation at the Neonatal ward.
