Some 7,012 summonses have been issued to motorists within eight days of the 11th 'Op Selamat' in Terengganu.

State Traffic Enforcement Investigation Department chief Supt Abd Razak Hasan said of the total, 5,453 summonses were issued through offences captured on speed cameras while 1,559 summonses were issued directly to those who committed the offences.

"Statistics show a slight drop compared to last year, where about 6,699 summonses were issued via speed cameras and 1,188 directly," he told Bernama adding that the highest number of offences were for beating the speed limit, no driving licence and for traffic obstruction.

He said 'Op Selamat', recorded 344 accident cases involving 11 deaths from nine fatal crashes and the Kuala Terengganu district recorded the highest number (96 cases), followed by Kemaman (75 cases) and Dungun (62 cases).

Abdul Razak said traffic congestion during the festive season was handled better compared to last year as a result of various strategies and initiatives taken in several accident-prone locations with the focus on the East Coast Highway 2 (LPT 2) exit routes in Chukai (Kemaman), Paka (Dungun), Ajil (Hulu Terengganu) and Gemuruh (Kuala Terengganu).
