A total of 572 investigation papers on the fraudulent sale of face masks involving losses of about RM5.5 million have been opened by the police as of Wednesday.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said most of the fraud cases involved online transactions including via Facebook and WhatsApp platforms.

He said Selangor recorded the most cases with 122, followed by Johor (68) and Penang (68).

"Of these, police have detained 181 individuals, with 53 individuals indicted in court since March 18," he said at a daily press conference here on Thursday.

Following this, Ismail Sabri reminded the public to be careful when making online purchases.

"Avoid dealing with suspicious websites and check reviews and comments from past purchases. Don't be fooled by these easy offers.

"Face masks are now readily available including in shops and pharmacies. So, avoid being duped like in these cases," he said.
