About 250 houses were razed in a fire at a squatter village in Kampung Landung Ayang Laut here this morning.

The blaze caused more than 1,000 people to lose their homes.

However, no injury or loss of lives has been reported yet.

It is understood that efforts to put out the fire were still ongoing.

According to a Sabah Fire and Rescue spokesman, a team with three fire trucks were despatched to the location after receiving a distress call.

In the incident around 4.50am, it is believed that the fire first broke out at one home before the wind quickly caused it to spread. The homes were also built of wood and located too close to one another.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
