The Malay Rulers' call for the government to quickly resolve the issues surrounding 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) shows their concern towards the crisis that continues to undermine the public’s confidence in the government.
UMNO deputy president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said, it goes to show that the 1MDB crisis is a major issue and the Malay Rulers worry of the negative impact it has on the nation.
"The Rulers don’t issue statements unless the matter is really big and touches on the interest of the country and rakyat.
"Because the Rulers have called for the government to quickly resolve the 1MDB crisis, the one who should heed this call is Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, as the head of government.
"The responsibility to solve this matter in the end falls on Najib's shoulders and he needs to ensure that investigations on 1MDB by the relevant agencies are conducted fairly and transparently without any interference or intervention from any party," he said in a statement Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the Malay Rulers had called on the government to complete the investigation related to 1MDB soonest and take "the appropriate stern action" against all found to be implicated.
Their royal highnesses had stressed that all concerned should extend "real and sincere" cooperation for the investigation to achieve its objectives.
The statement was released by the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Datuk Seri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad.
At the same time, Muhyiddin said it is the Attorney-General’s Chambers' responsibility to charge those involved, if the probe by Bank Negara Malaysia shows evidence of wrongdoings that could be punishable by law.
"I worry because the 1MDB crisis is a matter of public interest; the A-G's delay in bringing those to book will cause the public's confidence in the government to continue to deteriorate.
"It would be wise if the A-G can inform the public about the latest development on the case soonest," he said.
"Adopting the spirit of the Rulers, enforcement agencies such as the Royal Malaysian Police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission which were previously part of the Special Task Force probing the 1MDB case, must be given the space and freedom to continue their investigation until it is resolved," he added.
