The final audit report on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) will be declassified once the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) tables its findings on 1MDB in Parliament, said PAC chairman Datuk Hasan Arifin.

He said Auditor-General Tan Sri Ambrin Buang told a PAC meeting today that this was provided for under the Official Secrets Act 1972.

"The 1MDB audit report is classified as an official secret document until it is tabled in Parliament," he said in a statement after chairing the PAC meeting at Parliament House.

The explanation was given following confusion over the status of the 1MDB audit report that was classified as an official secret under the Official Secrets Act 1972 after the auditor-general handed it to the PAC last Friday.

He said the auditor-general was legally entitled to classify the report as an official secret to prevent any leakage of the contents to irresponsible people who could portray a negative perspective of the National Audit Department and the PAC.

The 1MDB audit report was presented to the PAC in accordance with a decision of the Cabinet instructing the National Audit Department to undertake an audit of 1MDB.
