SINCE its inception in 2010, Instagram users are only confined to posting square photos and videos.

In a move to allow its 300 million users more variety, Instagram is allowing photo and video postings in both portrait and landscape orientation.

“It turns out that nearly one in five photos or videos people post aren’t in the square format, and we know that it hasn’t been easy to share this type of content on Instagram: friends get cut out of group shots, the subject of your video feels cramped and you can’t capture the Golden Gate Bridge from end to end,” said Instagram in a statement posted on its blog.

When choosing a photo or video, users can tap the format icon to adjust the orientation to portrait or landscape instead of square.

However, users’ post will appear as a center-cropped square under the profile grid.

The new feature is available on Instagram for iOS version 7.5 and the Android version 7.5.
