Malaysia Multimedia University student Nursyafiqah Azlan,18, is one of five Malaysian photographers to make it to the top 10 of the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards.

Nursyafiqah's image "Unforgettable Memories" taken during a family trip to Melaka was shortlisted in the Student Focus category, while four others made it in the open category - Ann Ric in the nature category, Foley Hits (Culture), Jian Seng Soh (Street Photography) and Yong Lin Tan (Enhanced), Sony said in a statement here on Tuesday.

According to Sony, over 227,000 images from 183 countries were submitted for the awards.

It said the judges also commended eleven Malaysian photographers in the awards' Open competition and they were among the top 50 in the world for their images.

They are Muslianshah Masrie (commended twice), Aaron Ng and Swee Hoe Lim in culture category, Andrew Lim (nature), Azman Karib Ibrahim (motion), Danny Yen Sin Wong, Wong Wai Sun, Sian Kooi Kua and Edwin Ong Wee Kee (travel) Mun Khean Wong (architecture) and Ruzely Abdullah (street photography).

"The Open category winners will be announced March 28, the overall winner and the Student Focus winner will be revealed at an awards ceremony in London on April 20," it said.

Prizes include the latest Sony digital imagery equipment, a trip to the awards ceremony in London and USD30,000 (USD1=RM4.44) in cash prizes.

The Student Focus winner will receive EUR30,000 (Euros) (1Euro=RM4.70) of Sony equipment for their university.

The work of all the shortlisted photographers will be shown alongside the awards' of other shortlisted and winning images at the Sony World Photography Awards & Martin Parr - 2017 Exhibition in London from April 21 to May 7. -- Bernama
