The government on Tuesday announced two housing models worth RM48,000 per unit to be constructed for flood victims whose homes were completely destroyed in the recent floods.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the houses measuring 660 sq feet would be built on stilts above the ground.

He said the house would have three bedrooms, a dining hall, a living room, a toilet and a bathroom.

"The house must be completed within a maximum of 75 days and to ensure that the deadline is met, we will appoint as many credible contractors as possible to avoid delays," he said at a media conference after chairing a special meeting on the post-flood action plan, here.

Muhyiddin said a total of 2,606 houses were damaged during the flood throughout the country of which, 2,374 houses were in Kelantan.

He said all state governments had been asked to confirm the status of the land holdings of the victims as soon as possible to enable construction works to commence immediately including minimising normal procedures by the local authorities (PBT) during application for house construction.

"What is important is that as soon as the victim informs the PBT, and if he or she has been categorised as an aid recipient, the approval must be granted immediately," he said.

Muhyiddin said the government had also agreed to allocate between RM5,000 to RM10,000 for repairing houses that were damaged by the floods.

He said repair works on houses that were only partly damaged totalling 6,275 units, excluding in Kelantan, could begin immediately because these houses were registered under the flood committees at the affected state level.

The repair works could also be carried out on a 'gotong-royong' basis by the local communities where the equipment and building materials such as timber, cement, bricks and others would be supplied by the federal government, he said.

"We expect the repair works to be completed in less than two weeks," Muhyiddin added.
