Keira Knightley could be playing another Russian heroine on the big screen, this time in a biopic directed by Barbra Streisand about Catherine the Great.

After her 2012 interpretation of Anna Karenina, Knightley is reportedly in early talks to play the Russian empress who ruled from 1762 to 1796 following the assassination of her husband, reports The Wrap.

Streisand will direct for producer Gil Netter, who was behind "Life of Pi" and "The Blind Side."

The film will follow a young Catherine, who was trapped in an abusive marriage with the heir of the Russian throne.

The script by Kristina Lauren Anderson topped the 2014 Black List of Hollywood's best unproduced screenplays.
