Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has taken to task the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) for its failure to show proof of its statements on its financial state.

He also chided the 1MDB for hiding behind its excuse that its dealings are secret as they are government matters.

“To all my criticisms 1MDB, can only say that they are all wrong. But there are no proofs given. The answer is always about secrecy of Government matters,” he wrote in his blog today.

“No Cabinet paper on the 5 billion loan was presented. Produce the paper for the public to see. Of course you will say Cabinet papers are secret,” he said.

He also questioned if 1MDB can pay the RM2.4 billion interest per annum.

“Already it had to get money from Ananda and the IPIC to pay. Borrowing money to pay interest does not reduce the principal. It only increases the debt. Even if it is payment for shares or whatever the loan would still be there. So you cannot explain more. It is confidential – secret,” he said.

On Tuesday, IMDB had debunked various claims by Dr Mahathir on issues like Terengganu Investment Authority's (TIA) money, purchase of land as well as joint-venture with PetroSaudi and RM2 billion said to be borrowed from billionaire, Ananda Krishnan.

However, it said, due to confidentiality agreements, it cannot elaborate on why the RM2 billion equity investment was subsequently agreed by the parties to become an RM2 billion loan, it said.

In his latest posting, Dr Mahathir also said there were written evidence about Golden Sachs terms for the bond issue.

He called on 1MDB to show proof that Golden Sachs or Ambank did not impose high interest rate and 10% commission on the loan.

“Don’t just say it is a secret,” he said.
