Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) has awarded 50 work packages for the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line worth about RM20 million.

The work packages were awarded by way of ballot to Bumiputera companies from a pool of 471 contractors who were shortlisted and screened by MRT Corp.

In a statement Wednesday, MRT Corp CEO Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid said the balloting underscored the company's commitment to the Bumiputera agenda.

"The responsibility to carry out the Bumiputera agenda given to us by the government is a very heavy one.

"MRT Corp takes on this responsibility seriously in helping develop Bumiputera companies," he said.

Among the work packages awarded were for drainage, road, civil, steel, structural and architectural works, as well as, landscaping and general works.

The successful contractors will start work by year-end and the projects are expected to be completed by end-2014.

Azhar said successful companies would go through a compulsory two-day training programme which would cover project and finance management.

This is the second balloting held for Bumiputera contractors. The first balloting was carried out in January.
