Investments in the automobile industry could drive Kedah's transformation of its economy, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Mahathir said here, Tuesday.
He said the interest shown by industry players to set up bases in the state would create more business and job opportunities for the people.
"We feel that it would have a substantial impact on the growth of the economy as it provides good jobs, and it has a lot of spin-off efects," he said when opening the Volkswagen Langkawi 3S (sales, service and spare parts) centre.
Mukhriz said Volkswagen, known for its quality automobile products, not only emphasises state-of-the-art technology but also the importance of its workers.
Volkswagen Group Malaysia managing director Armin Keller said the company has enjoyed positive growth over the years with over 40,000 customers and 38 dealer outlets to serve them throughout the country,
Describing Malaysia as an important market, he said the group had spent over RM20 million to develop and train local talent in a bid to increase its service capacity in the country.
"On top of that, our training and knowledge transfer programme is still ongoing and we have Volkswagen Experts from Germany for on-site training here in Malaysia," he said.
Langkawi MP Datuk Nawawi Ahmad and Kuah state assemblyman Nor Saidi Nanyan were among the attendees at the ceremony.
