The police recorded 1,357 road accidents in Johor in a week after the launch of the 'Op Selamat 5' road safety campaign, said Johor Police chief Senior DCP Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff.

He said 15 of the accidents were fatal and resulted in 15 deaths. Two people were badly injured and two were slightly hurt.

Eleven of the dead were motorcyclists or pillion-riders, he said, adding that the rest were two lorry drivers, one driver of a four-wheel-drive vehicle and one tractor driver.

A total of 13,535 summonses for traffic offences were issued during the week, he told reporters at the Aidilfitri open house of the Johor police contingent.

Mohd Mokhtar said police conducted 3,379 visits to 2,416 houses that were unoccupied after their occupants had returned to their hometowns or villages for the Aidilfitri.
